As announced previously, The Matrix Conference is set to take place in Malmö, Sweden, in October 2026.

While the Call for Proposals is still open</a> until the end of June, we are happy to announce that you can buy a ticket</a> for the Conference right now!

To ensure you get the best deal, don’t wait until the last minute to register. You have until the end of May to secure an Early Bird ticket and save up to 20% on the ticket price. This is also your chance to pre-order official merch and secure the right size for you. We will also sell merch at the Conference itself, with no guarantees that we will get your size in stock.

We also have a special opportunity for those who want to contribute their time to make the event a success. Volunteers who enroll for two shifts or more on our volunteering platform</a> will get a free ticket and a special-edition zipper hoodie.

The Matrix Conference 2026: See You in Malmö!

We are excited to announce that The Matrix Conference 2026</a> will be held in Malmö, Sweden from 20th to 22nd October, 2026, and a Post-Conf Hackathon on 23rd October. Save the date!

After successful editions in Berlin</a> and Strasbourg</a>, we are bringing The Matrix Conference back with the same spirit: over 300 private enthusiasts, hackers, community admins, public and private sector professionals, vendors, integrators, and political representatives gathering to exchange knowledge, share developments, and shape the future of Matrix together.
The programme spans four days:

October 20 (afternoon): A networking event to get everyone together before the main programme kicks off, with thematic tables and facilitators to get the conversation started</li>
October 21 and 22: Two full days of talks, workshops, demos, and discussions</li>
October 23: A hackathon for those who want to keep building together after the conference</li> </ul>
As always, the talks will be streamed live and recordings will be available after the event, so you can follow along even if you cannot make it to Malmö in person.

PHEW! One month later and I’m still buzzing from the inaugural Matrix Conference</a> in Berlin. This was the first time we’ve gathered such a broad cross-section of the ecosystem both upstream and downstream, bringing together contributors, vendors, and end-users in the same place at the same time.
The result was a fantastic demonstration of how much we can learn from each other, how much progress we’ve made, and how valuable it is to have The Matrix.org Foundation as an ecosystem steward that can bring us all together.
When we were planning the conference, we weren’t sure how big the demand would be. Having hit capacity and sold out of tickets weeks before the event, we know to aim higher next time! We’ll get a larger venue next year, but it was very gratifying to have sessions where the room was literally full!
You could really feel the energy: all told, we had 236 participants from 12 countries across 3 continents, representing 79 different organisations, join us across 4 days of events featuring 52 speakers.

None of this would’ve been possible without the vision of Matthew Hodgson and Amandine Le Pape, a deep collaboration between the Foundation and the Matrix Community Events</a> team – namely Kim Brose, Nadine Minagawa, and Yan Minagawa, the help of the production team at Plain Schwarz</a>, more than a dozen on-site volunteers, and the hospitality of the venue staff at Mitosis LAB</a>.
And at the center, working behind the scenes to orchestrate everything? The Foundation’s own Thibault Martin, whose attention to detail, warmth, and expert juggling brought it all together.

Now, as you may know, events like this are not cheap to produce. We couldn’t have pulled it off without our event sponsors, Element</a>, DINUM</a>, Famedly</a>, Connect2x</a>, and Nordeck</a>, as well the Foundation’s funding members, Element</a>, Beeper</a>, Futurewei Technologies</a>, Fairkom</a>, Famedly</a>, Fractal Networks</a>, Gematik</a>, IndieHosters</a>, Verji Tech AS</a>, and XWiki</a>.
Even with all that support though, we ran The Matrix Conference at a loss. It’s not unusual for first year events to run at a loss, it’s just not something that the Foundation can afford to do again as we are still working toward financial sustainability. We had hoped to break even, but we knew that the Foundation needed to take the risk in order to demonstrate its value to the ecosystem and attract more funders.
Because not only did The Matrix Conference create opportunities to connect across the ecosystem, learn from each other’s experiences, recruit talent, make deals, and convene the Governing Board… It also fostered our sense of community, harmonized our efforts, and laid the groundwork to ensure Matrix is a stable, modern protocol that we can all rely on far into the future.
We need your help building on that groundwork to secure the future of Matrix. Join the Foundation as a funding member</a>, and secure your sponsorship of next year’s conference</a> which will be held in Strasbourg, France in the autumn of 2025 – if we can hit our funding targets.

The Matrix Conference Has an Exciting Lineup

We imagined The Matrix Conference as a gathering place for hackers, project managers, digital sovereignty leaders, and innovators. I’m proud to announce that we definitely succeeded in building a schedule covering that range of topics!
We received more than 60 high-quality proposals and ended up building 5 tracks over the course of 2 “core” conference days. The tracks cover everything from sovereignty and collaboration in the public sector to digital rights, Matrix internals, the social impact of Matrix, and Matrix as the foundation for products. 
The conference will occur between September 19th and 22nd at Mitosis Labs in Berlin</a>.

Thursday, 19, will be a BarCamp</a> starting at 10 a.m. local time. It’s an informal workshop-like day where attendees can join, pitch a topic they want to discuss and vote for topics they are interested in. In the evening, we will have a buffet at the venue.</li>
The two core conference days are Friday, 20, and Saturday, 21. The full schedule is on the Matrix Conference Website</a>.</li>
Sunday 22 will be dedicated to sprints: sessions where the attendees can gather to work together on ideas that emerged during the conference in a more relaxed atmosphere.</li> </ul> Tip: You can also view the schedule through pretalx-interoperable apps on your phone, such as Giggity</a> on Android.
We are particularly excited about the lineup of speakers:

Josh Simmons will open the conference, leaving the floor to Matthew Hodgson for a talk about Matrix 2.0 coming together and shaping the future of Matrix.</li>
Julie Ripa from DINUM will walk us through the past, present and future of Tchap.</li>
Jan Kohnert will explain how Matrix has become the foundation for a key communication service within Germany’s healthcare sector.</li>
Marco Holz will tell us how FITKO and the German Federal Ministry of the Interior joined efforts to pilot a Matrix-based next-generation communication infrastructure for digital government services.</li>
Renato Stalder will share the details of SwissPost creating a secure, nationwide communication system based on Matrix.</li>
Carla Griggio will give us an academic and nuanced perspective on walled gardens.</li>
Pavel Zoneff from the Tor Project will explain how encryption is a cornerstone of advancing human rights worldwide.</li> </ul>

The Matrix.org Foundation is happy to launch the first Matrix Conference</a>, this September 19th to 22nd in Berlin, Germany, at Mitosis Labs</a>! Click on the picture bellow to learn more! </a>
Building on the success of the Matrix Community Summit, the Foundation is joining forces with the Summit team to open the conference to wider audiences. This is the event that policy makers, public and private sector leaders, open source enthusiasts, and technologists attend to share knowledge and learn what’s next in the decentralised and secure communications sector.
This is THE gathering place for hackers, project managers, digital sovereignty leaders and innovators. With several tracks covering everything from sovereignty & collaboration in the public sector to digital rights and advocacy, all profiles will find content for their interest. Outside of the tracks there will be plenty of time and space to get to know others from the ecosystem and exchange ideas. 
The conference will happen from September 19th to 22nd at Mitosis Labs</a>, in Berlin.

Thursday 19 will be a BarCamp</a>: an informal workshop-like day where attendees can join, pitch a topic they want to discuss, and vote for topics they have an interest in. This event, taken from and organised by the Community Summit team, is the ideal place to warm up for the conference and meet others in the ecosystem.</li>
Friday 20 and Saturday 21 will be the two core conference days. With several tracks on a variety of topics like Matrix in the public sector, Trust & Safety, interoperability, data sovereignty, performance, and new use cases… Everyone will find a talk they want to attend.</li>
Sunday 22 will be dedicated to sprints. Those are sessions where the various attendees can gather to start working together on ideas that emerged during the conference in a more relaxed atmosphere.</li> </ul>
We are doing our best to make the event as inclusive as possible. The ticket price is kept as low as possible, and we will rely on an honour system to allow people who can’t afford it to get a free ticket. Regular tickets will start at €50, a €100 premium ticket will get you limited edition merch, and we plan €350 business tickets for organisations willing to support us.
Further, we are taking care to make sure the event venue is accessible, dietary requirements are satisfied, and to implement a robust Health & Safety policy alongside our Code of Conduct.
